 Who Have You Studied With???
Author: Ken
Date:   2001-05-05 18:04

Hi Folks! A few weeks ago, many of us participated in a fun and interesting topic listing what literature we were all working on. It was quite an array/mixed bag of outstanding solo, orchestra, excerpt, method book, concert band, contemporary, swing, bop, dixieland jazz and fusion ranging from beginner to advanced. So, I thought it would be exciting to know who/what players/teachers we have all studied with past and present, and that have been a major influence on our playing careers. I'll begin:

- Robert Marcellus (1973-1976)
- Melvin Warner (1977-1980)
- Ronald Ruben (1986)
- Chuck West (1997-present)

Of course, any list that starts with Robert Marcellus is bound to intimidate those of us who have only studied with relative unknowns. So I'll break the ice with a less intimidating list:

-Herb Sebren (1970-72), Norfolk Symphony
-Charles Russo (1972-74), NY City Opera

-L-o-n-g p-a-u-s-e of not playing

-Scott Boyer & Patti Carlson (occasional when needed, current), Virginia Symphony

Ken,
This thread seems to be moving slower than the one you referenced so I guess I'll contribute my seven months worth.

Everyone on this BB but especially, Bob Sparkman, Dee, and it could go without saying but I must mention Mark C., for without him none of this would be possible.

Then of course there is my recently aquired (is that a good way to say it?) teacher Dr.Kevin Cox. Formerly of the US Marine Corp and Prof. @ TA&M at Commerce, TX. Kevin has a Phd. in Music from IL. and taught at the USMC band school in VA. He likes jazz, as I do, and ocassionally plays with the Dallas Wind Symphony - I hope he does'nt throw too much "marching" music at me; I hated marching during my stint with the USMC.

Other than that, I was influenced by (the music of) Benny G. & Pete F.

That's All Folks

Benny Ehr, Madison, Wi--High School
William Dominic, Harry Peters, Glenn Bowen, Russ Dagon, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wi--1959-1966
Lots of playing experiances since then to present--I seem to learn something new from every student, player and conductor that I encounter. Education is truely a life-time adventure and one should always embrace new ideas. It has always been, good clarineting, saxing, fluting, teaching, conducting, arranging and, occassionally, good trumpeting and french horning. OK, now I have to mow the lawn.....GRRRRRR!!!

Donald McGinnis, Ohio State Univ., 1972-73.
(I still don't know if he's related to Robert.)

Stopped playing when I graduated from high school in 1974, then started again a couple months ago.

Back in the 70's, Rebecca Erlenbach, Ray Ludeke and David Abrams (sp) at UW Stevens Point, WI. And of course a lot of reading and listening. Of course, as stated earlier, this board is an education in itself. Thank you, Mark.

I have a great college student teacher, and couldn't ask for more, I've learned more form him than I coud probably learn from any clarient master player. No to say that I wouldn't love the oppurtunity but I 'm extremely content with my teacher right now, and out of the almost four years I've been playing, I have learned so much almost more than the people who sat around me at all state, who'd been playing for 6+ years. But I've always gone by the saying, Its not always the teacher's credidentionals that make them a good teacher.

Hi, Ken -
I had some private (formal?) studies with totally unknows outside Bakersfield, CA. After that, peers mostly - not exactly student/teacher situations - more like comparing, sharing and caring and having fun. Clarinet players I've known have been very supportive and willingly helpful to one another. Verrry few exceptions. I've had the pleasure of associating with people from the 'sticks', like me, to Guilliard graduates. Our common bond was music-making teamwork. Later, I became involved with small combos but still got together with other clarinet players. Jam sessions.... :] Still do when I can.

I went to Hartt School of Music with Paul Surapine. Is he teaching in the Massachusetts area?
Playing with any orchestras there? Lost contact with him for about 20 years so it's been a while. Just
happened to see his name that you were studing with him. Kathy Crotty
