Where is the extra right hand "pinky" finger key? There are only four keys--mine has five!

Not all alto clarinets have the low Eb key that's why.

Thanks Dee--Brenda sent me a msg on this. But he did advertise it as an Eb so now I guess I have to figure out what the extra key is--as all alto's are called Eb's even without the extra key. :-}

It's called an Eb alto because it is a transposing instrument pitched in the key of Eb. That is to say, if you finger the note identified as C, you will get concert Eb. In this case, it will be the Eb below the C. Clarinets and other transposing instruments are named for the concert pitch that you get when you play a printed C.

Here's a short list.

Ab sopranino clarinet - gives concert Ab above the C
Eb soprano - gives concert Eb above the C
Bb soprano - gives Bb just below the C and is the standard band clarinet
A soprano - gives A just below the C and is common in orchestras
Eb alto - gives Eb below the C
F basset - gives F below the C
Bb bass - gives the Bb at an octave + whole step below the C
Eb contra-alto - gives the Eb at an octave + whole step below the C
Bb contra bass - gives the Bb two octaves + whole step below the C

Going to some other instruments in the band:

Soprano saxes are in Bb
Alto saxes are in Eb
Tenor saxes are in Bb
Baritone saxes are in Eb
Bass saxes are in Bb

Flutes, piccolos, and oboes are in C. Although there are other sizes, they are quite uncommon.

English horns and French horns are in F

Trumpets are in Bb.

Actually there are three types of French horns: single horn in F, single horn in Bb and double horn in F/Bb. It is not uncommon for beginners to have only the single horn in F. Double horns are expensive.
