Marca reeds: What do you think?
Author: Mirko996

Hi, i bought about a month ago on amazon a new brand of reed to try on my mouthpiece (pomarico jazz double star).

the brand name is "Marca" and i decided to bough the model "american vintage" measure 3 and the first time and i found something ideal, and i didn't expect.

The first time was very strong (and not simple because i have cristal open mouthpiece, on close mouthpiece could be perfect maybe) but i adapted.

Reach altissimo notes (A7-B7) and staccato is formidable. I visit the webstore and i saw there's a lot of model like "Pete Fountain" [...]

Did you ever try these reeds? What do you think?

They aren't at all new. I tried a box, maybe, as long as twenty years ago and didn't care for them. But they may have evolved. Vandorens aren't what they were 20 years ago, either. If you find that they work well, use them. Someone has been playing on them all these years or they'd be out of business by now. :)

Really, there's write in the website some clarinettist/saxophonist plays Marca reeds.

i didn't pay so much (8€ circa). Not to attack the vandoren but prefer something else to them. In my home i have a very lot of box with different reeds and there's only one new box is vandoren: alto clarinet measure 1

Interesting. I usually play Gonz. FoF 2.75 or Rico Reserve 3, and tried a LaVoz medium. The LaVoz seemed dramatically softer.

I playied with gonzales reeds (red pack). Let's say are the first different reeds i started to take (and costs low). Some played good, others were too hard! (and was in the same package) but much better than vandoren, These are not so easily soiled.

However silver you aren't alone. I'm so strange to, if is really strange what we do.
I use different mouthpiece and different reeds to see the effect and in some chase i'm satisfied, some chase no. For now i should say i have reached a certain harmony with these reeds despite are mooore strong for my mouthpiece, before i tried a lot of type of reeds: Lavoz, Rico Plasticover, fiberred carbon soft, Pomarico (=Gonzales), Rico, Rico Royal, Riyin (yes, it too), Rigotti, Mitchell Lurie . All with different measure and aren't bad, but not for me, i don't feel for me.

I used them for a short time a very very long time ago. I'm thinking when I was a student if the early 60s. I didn't realize they were still be produced.

I just started using Marcas a couple months ago at the suggestion of a friend. I had abandoned Vandoren a handful of years ago (after decades of adherence to the brand), and moved on to Rico Reserve Classics. They were okay (better for me than the Vandorens). I didn't have a problem with the Ricos, but was curious about my friend's suggestion.

I changed to Marcas and find them a bit brighter out of the box than the Ricos, and otherwise very comparable. They mellow out a little after a week or two of use, and I really like the sound. I really have enjoyed them so far. I'm not throwing out my old boxes of Ricos, but I'm definitely moving on to the Marca brand for the next year or two. (I use the Pete Fountain series)
