 Favorite woodwind quintet pieces?
Author: ClariYES

Hi, I just started in a woodwind quintet and we are looking for some music to play. We're a mixed group of undergraduates and graduates.

I was just wondering what your guys' favorite quintet pieces to listen to and/or play are. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

I'm working on the Nielsen quintet with some friends right now, it's a great piece.

For me it's my first love, Hindemith's Kliene Kammermusic, op. 24 #2

There are more substantial pieces out there, but nothing beats the character and vividness of the these five brief movements.

Here's the classic recording from the 1950's by the principals of the Philadelphia Orchestra:

Here's the video of the Nielsen that was a semi-sensation on this board a few months back:

I agree with Nielsen and Hindemith, and I would add Barber's Summer Music and Damase's 17 Variations.

If you have a good pianist, definitely try Poulenc's sextet, and if the flute wants a rest, the Piano + Wind quintet by Mozart.

Some less monumental material:

Grainger: Lisbon (later became the 1st movement of Lincolnshire Posey)
Haydn: Divertimento #1 in Bb
Jansons: Suite of old Lettish [Latvian] dances
Faure/Williams: Berceuse from "Dolly"
Washburn: Suite
Diemer: Woodwind quintet #1
Cowell: Ballad

If your oboist or bassoonist is a member of the International Double Reed Society, that site has the complete Reicha and Danzi quintets in downloadable, printable form.

Do you have the Orange (now Yellow) Books http://www.amazon.com/22-Woodwind-Quintets-Albert-Andraud/dp/1581062001?

Francaix, Quintets (difficult)
Schoenberg Quintet (atonal, very difficult)

The Dorian Quintet had Henry Brant arrange many string quartets for WW quintet. They're some of the greatest music ever, but difficult to bring off.

Another great Scandinavian piece: Quattro Tempi by Lars-Erik Larsson.

Christopher Ball: Scenes from a Comedy - fun to play and to listen to, and not as lightweight as the title might suggest.
