 Vandoren Master Optimum

Does anyone know the difference between the Vandoren Master Optimum with the "M" stamped on to it and the one without the "M"?

I think they claim the one with the "M" on it works specifacally with the CL series, but I feel like it's false advertisement. They claimed that the CL series won't work with any other ligature, but funny enough the Vandoren Optimum, BG Super Revelation, BG Revelation, and BG Grand Duo both fit on snug. So I feel like the Vandoren M/O with the "M" stamped on it is just another way for them to give an excuse for people to have go out and buy one. Though those are just my guesses. Can anyone say it's probably true or untrue?

I can speak for the M/O. I have four of them, two black and two gold (one pair in Masters and one standard). The shape of the Masters mouthpiece is unusually narrow towards the tip, therefore a metal ligature would need to have less material toward the top to fit properly. So the Masters version of the M/O is correspondingly smaller and it fits properly (exerting a more even pressure from top to bottom of the reed).

I have an Optimum ligature that is about 10 years old and it does not work AT ALL on the Masters shaped mouthpieces.

But if you use any fabric or "formable" sort of ligature, there should be no problem adapting it to the Masters as one would expect.

ah I see thank you for the info. So it is somewhat necessary to get the newer more compatible version of the M/O ligature.

Yup.

Although there seemed to have been some quiet retooling since the M/O ligature first came out. The original version was just bigger. It seemed to fit fine on standard sized mouthpieces. Mine, however, broke unceremoniously as I moved it from a Masters to a standard mouthpiece over and over again. The demise of my ligature could also have come in part from over tightening as well (or both).

Now I own enough so that I am not left without one, and I try to be more careful in the tightening of the ligature.

I see, however I don't think I'll buy the newer version. I was thinking about buying the Ishimori and M/O with the "M" stamped on it, however I am perfectly happy with the Vandoren Optimum and BG Grand Duo. Both of which have modifications on them.

Also, based on what you wrote it looks like you have the CL series. Which one? And what do you think of it? I have the CL6 and absolutely love, however I find that I am a little sharp, but that's because I tune to 440 and the one I have is 442, oh well! I also find that it's not that famous... or at least the only mouthpieces I find people using are the M15, M30, M13, and the Reserve line.

I am a small tip opening kind of guy, so I gravitate toward the CL4. You can now find them in a 13 Series as well (they play lower in pitch) if that is a concern. Honestly though, one of the positive aspects of the original Masters mouthpiece is that it plays higher.

Yeah I thought about buying it however I didn't think it was necessary to be honest. I can already play it in time; plus youth orchestras push sharp anyway, so I think I'll stick with the ones I have. Love the tone though. Gives a unique sound that neither the Hawkins gives nor the reserve. Probably a hybrid like sound...I think.
