Aloha,
I came across a Buffet Clarinet but cannot find a serial number anywhere. The piece is marked in addition to the Buffet Logo and the letter C. Additionally on the bell with C. Fischer New York. The only number I could find on the instrument is 023. I have attached some photos and would be extremely happy if someone could give me some pointers.

I am embarrassed to say that I did not know the difference. Any idea where the serial number may hide on this piece?!?!?!

At least on clarinets, Buffet used serial numbers only beginning in 1885. Your oboe could pre-date 1885. However, the C. Fischer stamp on the bell (it was the exclusive importer) argues that it was made later than that.
On clarinets, the serial number is stamped on the back of the upper and lower joints near the top or the bottom. Early serial numbers were small and stamped very lightly. Scrub the area with an old, damp toothbrush to get any crud out.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. When you say upper and lower joint are you referring to the place where the upper and lower part are being stuck into each other? I scrubbed there and on the top and bottom of the piece and no number. Are there any other identifying markings to be found anywhere?

The Buffet oboes I have from the early years of the 20th century also do not have serial numbers. Yours could very well have been made from 1880 to 1910 or so. These are generally not played now but are owned by collectors.
