 Adjusting to a New Clarinet
Author: sarawashere

So I just upgraded my clarinet and I love her xD But I have an audition in a week and I want to make sure I'm properly used to the new instrument. Any advice on adjusting to a different instrument? Is there a process or...?

Thanks!
Sara

In an ideal world one wouldn't change anything just 1 week before an audition.

However if youy only have the new instrument to use now then it becomes a matter of aclimatising yourself to it's physical and acoustical characteristics.

The first means practice practice practice

The second means finding reeds or adjusting existing reeds to perform optimally on the new clarinet. Even if you keep (hopefully) the same mouthpiece the response of your current reeds may be different on the new clarinet as it will quite likely have different inherent resistance.

Good luck

For me the issue is one of tuning. Each clarinet will tune differently from another (even one R13 to another R13) so being comfortable with the fingering choices and embouchure adjustments are the things that concern me mostly. Usually it takes me a month or so at least to gain some confidence in this regard.

Practice, Listen.....Practice, Listen. Repeat often and with persistence. Your new clarinet will reveal itself to you and you will learn how to temper it. However, one week??????????? not long enough unless you give up sleep.

Which will have its own detrimental consequences.

But by playing the new clarinet you will know what differences, if any, are stumbling blocks. If you "love her," then she [it] must be giving you a good result already. If in your normal practice regimen you find there are things you can't do as easily as before, concentrate on those and just stay generally at the top of your game for the rest.

Changing equipment a week before an important audition isn't something I would have particularly recommended, but the reality is that if it isn't causing identifiable problems, you don't need to leave your normal routine.
