Have Buffet E-11 that says Germany purchased about 1 year ago. Thinking about upgrading to 'better' mouthpiece than standard that came with it. I play mostly only for myself but do want it to sound good. Not sure I even need to upgrade and wouldnt want to pay more than $150 tops, but I find players upgrade parts all the time even on new instruments. I dont know how to begin and was hoping for some pointers or tutorials. Should I just go in a music store with my E11, talk to the staff, and ask to try some to see if I can tell a difference? I know some brand names and types but so many fine differences in measurements, and specifications it confuses more than helps. Any advice? Thanks for anything offered.

As my Professor had said "If a mouth piece furthers your playing ability, then buy one. But if you just 'need' a new one, don't get one. I wouldn't do that to my students"

If you are playing with the Buffet mouthpiece that came with the instrument, you can easily do much better without spending a ton of money. Most of the Buffet stock mouthpieces are not at all good. It would be helpful to know if that is indeed what you are playing on, and also what your general playing level is.
Are you a relative beginner to intermediate player? If so, the Forbes Debut mouthpiece for about $30 is a really good place to start, assuming that you are going for a traditional classical/concert band sound concept. I actually prefer this mouthpiece to any of the Vandorens for my own playing, and it works well with Legere reeds for most people. I use it as a back-up on those bad reed days when nothing else works well. My primary mouthpiece is a custom one and not so good with Legeres, but the Fobes is a good player for just about anyone. Most of my advanced high school students still use the Fobes mouthpiece for marching band due to it's low replacement cost and are happy to do so.
