 Books about Learning clarinet
Author: ylock

Hi all,
I am writing a paper about learning clarinet and looking for some literature...
Anyone have books, best online, that I can look up?
I need answer to questions like:
What is the best age to start Clarinet, and why ?
More about the connection between the student and his clarinet..
etc. etc.

Thanks !

Yehiel

I do hope that there are some resources for you but I can't think of any on the nuts and bolts questions you ask. For instance the age one can start clarinet has more to do with size of fingers vs. size of holes (or even the comfortable span of the fingers). I have a student for example whose fingertips were barely big enough to cover the diameter of the tone holes at first - so that would be a limiting factor.

If I recall correctly, Henry Questa, a fine clarinet player with the Lawrence Welk band, featured his young son on a show of the cast's progeny. Questa got around the size thing by having his son play an Eb clarinet (more diminutive in size).

The literature most common is exercise manuals followed by the far rarer books on artistry and history (Keith Stein's "Art of Clarinet Playing" and Jack Brymer's "The Clarinet").

Perhaps you can find (though I don't know how to go about it) more esoteric literature in University and Conservatory libraries where students need to create them for masters and doctorate programs.

Worldcat.org may help. Look at:

There are some titles there that may be on point. Look at their listings and then search (click on) their subject headings to find yet more material.

I agree with Paul's advice about the size of the fingers. I've found that age 9 or 10 is usually a good age to start.

Keith Stein's book is good, and I also like David Pino's The Clarinet and Clarinet Playing. Pino is a very loyal student of Keith Stein, although his embouchure advice is slightly different. Pino also has a great chapter about teaching others the clarinet.

If you're interested in ideas about teaching embouchure, Bruce Pearson also has some good advice.

Michelle Gingras has her Clarinet Secrets books which are good, and you can also view her podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/clarinet-secrets/id262672700?mt=2

 Bass clarinet book

Is there a book specifically written for bass clarinet playing? My new Selmer 35 has more keys than my Yamaha, and I need all alterative fingerings possible.
