He's acting principal, still not the real principal.

Well, after doing an internet search I found his background. Also, You Tube unearthed a solo piece he played three years ago with 699 (now 700) views.
I listened to a clarinetist , Anthony McGill, perform and thought the orchestra needs to pursue him. Upon a search I discovered he's principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic. I need to pay better attention to Alec Baldwin in the future. The Browns will win the super Bowl before we get him.

Ben Lulich is a terrific performer. I heard his recital last summer at the ICA Clarinet Festival in Baton Rouge, LA, and it was a winner. He has it all--large, romantic tone, deep mature technique, wide dynamic range, and a solid grasp of musical styles. On YouTube, you can listen to him play the Abyss of Birds solo from the Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time.

It will be exciting to hear him grow in this position with one of the world's great orchestras.

¿Can anyone "in the know" tell us how these kind of appointments are made? Is it on the basis of reputation, recommendations, availability, a private audition with the conductor? Is he the heir apparant or is he keeping the seat warm for someone else?

Sometimes there's an anounced audition for a one year position. In a case like this they usually invite a group of players to audition for the conductor and committee in a short time frame to fill a temporary position. The invities will be based on recommendations from members of the auditioning committee or the conductor. Sometimes a few players will be invited to perform with the orchestra for a week if time allows based on the recommendations. They did the same thing this year in Baltimore, hiring someone for a one year position and will hold auditions next spring for the full time position.

I didn't think it was acting, but according to the article it is.
He's a great player!

I thought he got it, but the article would know

Are you saying the article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer is incorrect?

"Don't go toasting Lulich just yet, however. A spokesman for the orchestra said the artist, principal clarinet of the Seattle Symphony, is still auditioning. In fact, he said, the entire 2015-16 season, beginning Sept. 21 and including tours, will serve as an extended audition process. Hence the "acting" in his new title."

The Cleveland seems to have a tradition of letting people play, tour, and record for a year and then deciding they aren't good enough to hire. Hope it doesn't happen this time.

Does anyone know how Ben Lulich's trial year went? I'm hoping he got the job but haven't seen any articles mentioning anything since 2015.

Ben was offered tenure in Seattle and accepted it.

Ben was out here with the Pacific Symphony in CA a few years ago, got to hear him play solo at a couple of the outreach events for their education program donors. Really good stuff!
