 Altissimo D# sharper fingering
Author: Rhgsf

Hi everyone,

I recently play in an community orchestra, and always bother about playing with Oboe players. Their highC# is always sharper, while my altissimo D# (same note with OboeC#) is relatively flat than neighbor notes (i.e. C#, D and E).

I tried some alternative fingerings, but all of them are lower than the normal fingaring (TR XOO OXXEb with RH B/F#key).

Does everyone know alternate fingerings to sharp highD#?

Thank you

Rhgsf

What fingerings are the oboe players using for their top C#? I bet there are other fingerings they can use that are flatter (or in tune).

I thought the standard fingering for altissimo D#/Eb on clarinet was:

Sp. Th. OXX|XO/O Ab/Eb

The opinions I express are my own.

did you look at the fingering chart on this site?

try oxx | oxo Eb

Or clarinet fingerings by Ridenour - you'll find 10-20 options for each of the altissimo notes.

I just tried a few fingerings, here are some that come out (in some cases very) sharp:

TR (G#) OXX|XO/O Eb (+40 cents)

TR (G#) OXX|OXO Eb (+30 cents)

TR (A) OXX|XXO (+25 with Eb key, +15 without)

R (no T) XXX|OOX Eb (+5 cents)

Thank you for your kind suggestions.

>Mr. Chris P,
I see. I can ask oboe players to change fingerings. But in my experience, the normal C# fingering of oboe is sharper than the same note of clarinet, in general.

Yes, I wanted to say that. Sorry.

>Mr. pewd,
I looked at the fingering chart, but all of them are flatter than the normal one, including your suggested one.

>Mr. maxopf

Thank you for your suggestions!! Especially, the third and fourth fingering are fantastic!!. I will try those fingerings next time.

I always lip top C# down on oboe as it's one of those notes that's easy to blow sharp. The fingering I use is oxx|xooC or oxx|xoxC depending which is best tuned with the other players. Another fingering is oxx|xoxC# but you have to make sure the closure of the RH mid fingerplate is adjusted correctly along with the low C key as well as the adjustment of the LH1 fingerplate for it to speak cleanly. Top C# is my least favourite note on oboe as it's so variable.

The problem with oboe in a wind ensemble is we have to sit in between the flute and clarinet - flutes are often very sharp up top and clarinets are more secure with their tuning or sometimes flat depending on the player, so it's a case of getting the balance right in between the two.

I've had a couple of A clarinets where this note was a tad flat (a Buffet Festival re-reamed by Guy Chadash, and a Leblanc/Backun Symphonie) and on both these horns I found the following fingering to be useful when i had loud, sustained or exposed altissimo E flats....
TR XXX 0X0 Ab/Eb with the throat G sharp key open
not very useful in fast passages, but quite useful for sustained notes (ie the high E flat at the start of the first Dances of Galanta cadenza)
