I just saw one of these for sale identified as the Model 584N. It is metal clarinet with an adjustable barrel, separate top and bottom joints, and the bell attached. It looks extremely similar to the Conn Model 524N, which was a pro quality clarinet and my every day horn. The 524N is one of the best metal clarinets made. I restored a Moderne and discovered that the bore size is larger and the chimneys are in slightly different locations. Nothing I could do would make it play well. If it wasn't the worst metal clarinet I have restored, it was close to the worst.
Has anybody seen this one in a catalog? If so, I'd be very interested to see whether the model number in the ad is accurate and to learn what Conn said about the instrument. Conn sold the 524N for $125 in the early 1930s. I'd like to know when they offered the Moderne and what they were selling them for.

That is a great source. Thanks for pointing it out. I have just been through all of the 1930s catalogs and found only one page for more student oriented metal clarinets -- the Continental. Am learning a lot about some of the pro models and I have seen some variations in the models in the catalogs that I have not yet seen on ebay. I guess what I need to find is a trove of Pan American catalogs.

What was wrong with it? I have one and did find that the barrel seems to leak unless it is screwed all the way in, perhaps due to wear? I just pulled the barrel out a smidge at the joint and this worked much better! After new pads, etc... it seemed to play fair, though I have one key that needs extensive repair or replacement.
