after many years of struggling to be heard over the rest of the band i have found the holy grail . a rico metalite clarinet mpc.thats right for clarinet! they are finally in production but hard to find. i liked it so much i bought 2. under 30$ .so loud you dont even need the mike!! everyone comments that they can now hear the clarinet solos. if you play clarinet in a big band get this mpc!!!!!

under $30 that sounds like that clarinet isn;t as perfect as you described it must be a plastic piece of junk for that little of a cost.And my opinion is try the Buffet Crampton they are good and someone told me about an AMATI those are good also.,

Also worth checking out are Ralph Morgan's J series pieces. Pretty loud and free blowing but with a good sound. Probably too bright for classical but good for jazz and big band.

I'd love to see the trumpet section in our big band with earplugs--especially since one of them is my brother who has played at full volume since I was a mere child.
I finally found the Leblanc LL clarinet and the Kaspar mouthpiece as my best bet in the big band setting. A little more expensive than the $30.00 mouthpiece mentioned above--so it's nice to know you don't have to spend the family fortune to get a good set-up.

It's a fact that most school and community jazz ensembles confuse effective performance and volume and, in an effort to be impressive and sound "big," they simply overblow and play way too loud sacrificing control of sound, intonation and balance. The old rule of, "less is more," really works, and most award-winning, good sounding jazz ensembles use this rule effectivlely to control balance, quality of sound and intonation to acheive that "big sound." In a jazz ensemble (playing "accoustic only") that truely has all aspects of it's performance under control, a clarinet or flute solo should not have to be miked to be heard. LESS is MORE, think about it!!!! Good clarineting.
