After playing in various community, college, and musical theater groups for the past five years, I need a change of music. I'm thinking "big band" would be a lot of fun to try. What I'm hoping for from you are recommendations regarding "big band" music specific to bands of about 8-10 players. Most of the people in the band would be advanced players so we would want something that would challenge us as well as be enjoyable to audiences. Are there music books with a number of different tunes in them that you would recommend? Are there other genres of music, besides big band and standard community band repertoire, that would be fun to have a go at? Any recommendations in regards to music? Thanks ahead of time for your help.

After looking at the instruments required for Big Band music, I need to go to Plan B! Chamber Music may be it! I know the music available on IMSLP will all be "old." I'd welcome suggestions on contemporary Chamber Music if anybody has any ideas.

www.bigbandtranscriptions.com has a number of small big band arrangements (3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone, piano, bass, drums, guitar) and smaller combos. They cost 10 bucks apiece, cheaper if you buy more than one.

Benny Goodman played clarinet in a Big Band and Lawrence Welk had clarinetists in his band, yet none of the Big Band music has clarinet parts. What's a clarinetist to do??? I guess we could always transpose...ugh.

Dixieland is a blast, but I'm already in one Dixie band. I'm wanting something different from what I'm currently doing. My choices seem to be Chamber Music or Wind Ensemble if I want to play clarinet. I took a look at some music books this morning that look promising. You buy different books for which ever instruments you have in your group. There are religious, rock 'n roll, and classical options. Most of the books have level 1 and 2 music in them, though. I guess they could be good "warm up" pieces.
