 Scratch or Hairline crack?

Hi everyone,

I am a rising college freshman and today I noticed a "scratch" on the clarinet. I might just be overreacting, but I'm afraid it might be a hairline crack. Could people here look at it too? Thanks!

Pic not sufficiently clear. Use a bright light and a magnifying glass if necessary; if it's a scratch or a grain feature you'll be able to see light reflecting off the bottom.

Scratch. A Crack would run along the grain which (in most cases) is parallel to the bore.
IMO someone slipped with a screwdriver.

I think OP is talking about a nearly straight line, not the squiggly thing. I've had moments like yours, but generally when it's a crack there is no doubt.

Are you talking about the area above and below the trill key?

If you know how to remove the keys, remove that trill key and see if it goes through the tone hole. A better picture would help, but it looks like a crack starting above the tone hole and extending beneath it.

I am starting to actually believe it is a scratch... and Paul, not quite that area.

looks like a scratch, probably caused by a screwdriver slipping

Definitely scratches - a crack will run along the length of the grain, not perpendicular to it.
