I am wanting to replace a weak spring in the post/pillar of the forerunner to the Yamaha YCL-250 which is the Yamaha YCL-26. This is a resin bodied clarinet and I'm not sure whether the post unscrews or is set when manufactured. Apart from pillar removal I can see no easy solution.
Can anyone advise? I don't want to risk attempting to unscrew the pillar and damage the clarinet especially if it is not threaded.

It is not normally necessary to remove the post to replace a spring. The old one can be withdrawn and a new spring fitted.

Have you tried bending the spring a little more to strengthen it?

The tension in the spring has gone in that bending it further and then easing it over the key simply seems to weaken its effectiveness . Total replacement is the only option.

As Tony said, you usually do not need to remove posts to replace springs.

If the spring is still intact I would recommend cutting it off about 2mm from the pillar. This leaves a short but rigid stubb that can usually be pushed out of the pillar by sqeezing between spring end and far side of pillar with (preferably parallel jaw) pliers.
If spring has broken off flush with the pillar it's a bit more tricky and usually best left to a tech with the right tool(s) and experience.
