I have been using my newly acquired VanDoren M14 mouthpiece on my E11 Buffet clarinet for several months now and have found it to be very satisfactory. I am using Rico Royal #3 reeds, and as a strictly amateur clarinetist I am enjoying playing my popular music pieces with it. The notes play easily enough and sound good to my ear.
I have read on this BB that many of you have used or are using the M13 mouthpiece and I would like to get some opinions about your satisfaction or dissatisfaction with it. What could I expect to experience between these 2 mouthpieces...Brighter or darker tone? Ease or difficulty in playing notes? Which sound would you prefer for a popular song? In other words what differences would I find between these 2.
I would like to get some opinions before I go out and try the M13.
Thank you for any opinions offered.

I've never tried the Vandoren M14. But of what I know of the M13, it was made in conjunction with Buffet to use with the Buffet R-13 line of clarinets. I've found a darker tone quality with an easiness of playing. I used a B45 before the M13, and found that I had a more focused sound with the M13, for a lot less air pressure. I could play longer and better with the M13 than with the B45.
My best advice (as well as many others) is to just try them both out for yourself and decide for yourself.

I have played both (started on the M14) in the same profiles, and in both tip versions (Lyre and standard).
I settled on the M13.
The M14 seemed veiled and covered to my tinpot ear. The M13 seems to offer more flexibility... if I want an edge, I can find one. If I want a creamier approach, that is available, too.
I think (remember, no big letters behind my name), that the side walls of the M14 are closer together than the M13.
I find the M13 freer-blowing as well.
One caution, neither of these are known for consitent quality so an audition is appropriate.

I've play-tested several of these mouthpieces and find the M14 the hardest to play because it requires a harder reed to really play well. It also is more closed than the M13, or M13Lyre.
The 13 series was originally designed for the Buffet R-13 and American pitch of 440. The M14 is part of the 13 series as well.
I personally like the M13s better than the M14 just because they're easier to blow and have a nice tone. The M14 is supposed to have a darker tone than the M13, but it's not enough difference to warrant the money.
Try using a harder reed with your M14. It might take a while to get used to it, but as you increase the volume of air you push through the instrument you'll be surprised at the results of your tone.

I used the M13 Lyre for a long time, now I am using the M15...wonderful sound, easy articulation...V12 3.5 reeds, Eddie Daniels II ligature....the M14 has been discontinued anyway...

I have both an M13 & M14 profile 88, as well as a 5RV, a Gigliotti P34 and a B45.
I like the M13 & 14 for how easy they speak and the warmth and strength of sound, but I cannot see an appreciable difference between them. The M13 blows a tiny bit easier depending on the reed. I use the Vandoren V12s in a 4 and sometimes a Zonda reed. I like the M13 and M14 for wind ensemble and the 5 RV for chamber music or orchestra. Having 2 mouthpieces so similar IS convenient in orchestra tho, when there is a lot of switching back & forth between A & Bb clarinets. Tune both and keep the reed wet during breaks and you are away.
