I started cleaning and restoring the Ridenour 147 I got. First clarinet I disassemble and clean, I guess that my watch hobby helped out both for tools amd for technique. I managed to fully disassemble, wash, clean, replace key corks where needed and reassemble the upper joint. Pads were mostly cork and in good shape, just the register one might require replacement, but will evaluate when I play it. At least 2 pads in the lower joint will need replacement (bladder). That might prove more challenging...

I used dilluted lemon scented dishwasher soap and a toothbrush for most of the cleaning, and it is looking and smelling good. I cleaned the bore using a soaked microfiber swab, and it shines now...

I have two questions where I would appreciate feedback

1) One of the rings in the barrel is loose. As it is not wood, I assume I should just apply a bit of superglue and that should be it?

2) The case was stinking when I got it - cigarette smoke... Not the interior, though, luckily. I cleaned the vinyl using 3M vinyl/leather cleaner, but did not help a lot. i just repeated the process, but I really soaked it this time. Looks like it improved now, but will know for sure over the next 24-48 hours.

Any other suggestions for getting rid of smoke smell in cases made out of vinyl?

Thanks in advance!

You could always write Tom Ridenour directly, you could find a contact email address on his site. That'd be my best suggestion anyways.
