Think of a carrier frequency as a single high frequency sinusoid. This is the frequency that you tune your AM or FM radio to, to receive a particular station.
With AM, the carrier amplitude is varied with the amplitude of the audio input, e.g., voice or music.
With FM, the frequency of the carrier is varied around the carrier frequency, and the frequency variations are related to the audio input amplitude.

visit the library..... see what they have....
visit the military recruiting offices in your area... see if there is a communicator there... they will have books that they use to study from.... has info from the basics al the way thru to about as advanced as you can get.....
check to see if you have a disaster team in the area.... where I am at, they use the Ham operators for communications during emergancy times......
check the phone book for any amature radio clubs.....
go to radio shack for books or other info on the subject....
check around your neighbor hood for a house with lots of antenna on it.... even if there is only one wire going to a house from a pole and there is no other wires going to the pole ( called a long wire antenna ) will be connected to pole and house only..... look to see if you can see two or more satty dishes in the yard...
one will be for radio, the other may be for tv....
most hammies... ( amature radio operators ) love to talk about their hobby.. some it is almost a life style and would be glad to show you and teach you....
