How many have insurance for theft or repair on your clarinet?

Never had any insurance on any of my clarinets or saxophones and have been very lucky--no thefts, loss or on the gig damage.

Insurance is provided by my orchestra, BUT as a freelancer I both bought my own insurance and skidded by without it when money was tight. It wasn't lost on me that if I couldn't afford insurance, I sure couldn't afford to replace the 6-20K worth of clarinets I might be driving around, but sometimes you do what you have to do. About the best deal I found was the AFM instrument insurance.

Theft. Never needed it. Careful with not leaving the instrument unattended as if I had no theft insurance on it.

Note: US policies for instrument theft often exclude exemptions for instruments stolen out of vehicles under the theory that the vehicle's insurance is the primary reimburser for such loss.

As with all insurance and theft, documenting with photographs before the potential loss is wise.

As a homeowner, I found the best rates by adding a valuable items policy to my homeowner's policy, and scheduling my instruments on it. Homeowner's insurance is needed in the States in nearly all circumstances where a home's loan isn't paid off, and insane not to have otherwise unless rich enough to self insure.

Here is an old but good thread http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=373330&t=30713. I checked the links, which are still good except for Merz Huber, which is at https://www.huntingtontblock.com/Pages/MerzHuberMusicalInstrumentInsuranceProgram.aspx.

Read the thread carefully, as there are many traps for the unwary. For example, homeowner's insurance does not cover an instrument used professionally.

I have my more expensive instruments insured with Clarion. It covers the instrument no matter where it is, in your house, your car, a locker at the train station. There is a discount for union members, which made the cost of the insurance plus union membership cheaper than the cost of just the insurance without the union membership.

Things may be different in the US to the UK but the points that I have found important are:
How valuable is the instrument? - a professional level or even intermediate instrument may be more than the single-item limit on a household contents policy.

Also, if you are relying on a household contents policy, make sure that personal possessions are covered outside the home (often an option at additional cost on policies).

Thirdly, are you in a situation where you may need or want to take the instrument abroad? Again, travel insurance policies may not have high enough cover for a single item for a good instrument.

Personally I find it worth having a specialist policy for all these reasons.

Vanessa.

I've insured my expensive clarinet. I am not a professional so my homeowner's does cover it thanks to an add-on policy specific to the clarinet. My concern was cracking. I don't leave it unattended so am not concerned about theft...but you just never know! I think the added insurance is about $12 a year.
