Selmer Signet Special (bought on ebay) $213.50
Hite Premiere MP, Lurie 2 & 2.5 reeds $44.43
1st lesson, Rubank Elem. and silk swab $30.52
Sitting at home practicing my first 7 notes -- priceless!!!!!!
As 40 approaches, it was time to start a new hobby. I have played piano for the past 5 years and was ready for a new musical challenge. This BB has been extremely helpful to me in getting over the confusing array of choices of instruments, reeds, MPs, etc. Thanks to all who post on this board for help, insight and inspiration.

Yes, Alan T., priceles, indeed! Been playing since grammar school, am now 73 and retired, and am stil finding daily delight in my clarinet, both alone and with others. It is a delight to see your enthusiasm, and I'll wager it will be there for many years to come. By the way, your piano studies wil be a great help, and you'll find some similarities in both instruments. Clarinet/piano works in classical music abound; and no more fully realized jazz work has come out of the unity of concept common to both. Best wishes on your new lifetime voyage of profound satisfaction, delight and discovery!

I started clarinet at 32 (I'm 42). My main instrument was piano. I find the clarinet contributes a great deal to my piano performance. But, other than note recognition, the piano doesn't seem to enhance my clarinet playing. The clarinet encourages me to bring something much more intimate to the keyboard. Also, experience with different reeds (soft vs. firm) has taught me to listen differently to piano tone (bright vs. dark). Good luck! --Bill.

I echo Bob's good wishes, being a tad older than he (76) and still finding joy in the thrill of being able to just be able. You are right about this wonderful group, or should I say, family, of musicians. They give unstintingly of their time and talent to help us older geezers and the younger folk too. My thanks to all of them, and specially to Mark for the ability to be able to "tune in."

Do remember to be kind to your family members in their trials (I practiced for the first three months when my wife was not home.)
Put the cat out, too. Carpet stains are a natural complication, otherwise.
Congrats!
Soon, you will hear clarinet music everywhere.

PS - Getcher self a Legere #2 3/4 for when the Mitchell Lurie cane reeds 'Act up'.

One other thing I would add to your list.
Since you purchased the Selmer from ebay I would take it to a tech and have it adjusted. One thing you don't want is a clarinet in poor condition. That way when you hear funny notes; you know it is you and not the horn.
I have been at this over a year and love it. I'm younger then all those old guys (65). Just a kid at heart.
Best of luck.Bob

So you are, Shelly, I started at age 10,[1929] and am still playing, and devote some 3-5 hours per day to the BB, EBAY and the Early Clarinet-Bass Clarinet sites, sharing and learning all the time [for enjoyment and senior "exercise"] Don

Congrats....
Good choice on the instrument, I play one I bought new in 1969. Its a very decent intermediate. Good price too, esp. if the pads are good.
I suspect going from piano to clarinet is easier than the reverse, though welcome to the fun world of ledger lines.
Put out the dog also, a friend's once accompanied me, and he wasn't very good!

Oh Yeah,
Don't play when the Dallas Stars are on the ice, I'm tempted to throw something every time they refer to the 30-year old forwards as 'Grumpy old men'!
Seems like everything is marketed at the demo in diapers (both ends of the curve)!
Now where is my liniment?
