 Looking For a New Barrel
Author: Exiawolf

Greetings!
Currently I am using a Buffet E12F, paired with a Vandoren M30D, V12 3.5 reeds, and the stock barrel. If I was to look for a barrel upgrade, where should I start? I've heard good things about both the Buffet updrade barrels and Bakun barrels.

Considering the size of the M30D's chamber, I would try either a Moennig (by Buffet) or a Fobes :)

I use Clark Fobes barrels and they've really improved the sound quality of my instruments.

I use Wesley rice's Delrin Barrels (though he makes them in Grenadilla as well) and love them. He was very helpful to work with....worth shooting him an email

What are you hoping to change with a new barrel? I have several Fobes barrels, a few Buffet-Moennig ones and a few Chadash ones as well as several Backun barrels of different models in cocobola and grenadillla. I also have a few barrels made on special order by Allan Segal for my C clarinet that work very well. They all sound marginally (but audibly) different from each other and from the instruments' original barrels and they all have their attractive qualities.

I do have preferences but those have shifted over the years from time to time and I could not honestly say any are objectively superior to the others.

The original barrel that came with your E12F was part of the instrument's design. It's certainly possible to find something you personally prefer, but it may be a counterproductive waste of time and money if you don't know what qualities you're looking for before you start looking. If you only want to "sound better," you should think carefully about what now doesn't sound good to you. If you want a "darker, richer" sound, you'd better be pretty sure what you mean by those terms (or whatever ones you're focusing on) so that you'll now it when you hear it.

And, as has been repeated often here, the barrel has probably the least effect on sound and response of any of the individual parts of the system, only perhaps slightly more than the bell. You, your reeds, your mouthpiece and your instrument's main body have far more influence on your sound and the playability of the system.

I have had great luck with C. Robert Scott's barrels, available from Muncy Winds among others. I could live with my original Buffet barrel, but I prefer the feel, if nothing else, of the Scott.

If you have the time and a place to do so, definitely try out any of the Backun products. You can usually order a few on trial and send back the ones you don't like.

the E12F is an awesome model, even a regular R-13 barrel would help your sound. You can order one from almost any music store, or the icon barrels. I'd order one of both Icon and R-13 find which one you like the sound of better and return the one you don't!

But like Karl said above, it's really about what you're looking to change about your sound. I have a few different barrels I've picked up over the years, each one is different and it really depends what you're looking for : )
