The Clarinet BBoard

I have been playing on V16 alto sax reeds on my occasional alto clarinet sessions as suggested by a fellow Bboard member, and they worked well. But on my primary German bass(which uses alto clarinet reeds) they sound very muffled, while the "real alto clarinet" reeds still work. While I can reach Vandoren Traditonal 3(a bit too soft) or 3.25(aka. V12/V16 3.5) which is my most preferred strength, I am not able to reach to Traditional 3.5 yet. So I'm deciding to change to something else. Any suggestions for another alto clarinet reed substitute?
Or should I learn to tweak the alto sax reeds so convert them to alto clarinet reeds? How do I do it, can somebody teach me?
Josh

Try Legere Signature Alto Sax reeds. They are fab and if you are swapping between clarinets they are marvellous as you don't need to wet them and they don't warp.
Not sure how your reed strength varies between alto and Bb clarinet but I have a much softer reed on alto.

Joshua, if what you are actually looking for is reeds for your German bass, I'd recommend Pilgenstorfers, they're available in the US from Clark Fobes, but I'm not sure who your best supplier would be where you are.
I've made many ersatz German bass clarinet reeds from narrowed alto and French bass clarinet reeds, with mixed (and mostly unsatisfactory) results.

David, I actually want full-sized alto clarinet reeds, since they project better and they can actually fit onto many modern German bass mps. Many German players have been doing the same.
So I ask what make of alto sax reed can best substitute alto clarinet reeds?

I would suggest trying a few different types and seeing what gives you the best results for your taste and set up. I would consider the Rico Reserve and also their jazz select, which come in a great variety of strengths (3S, 3M, 3H , etc)
I remember that some of the alto clarinet mouthpiece makes actually specified that an alto sax reed worked best.

Or maybe anyone can teach me the small adjustments to convert alto sax reeds into alto clarinet reeds?

Can order those directly from manufacturer. Look online. More choices there. Might take longer to get.

I've used Gonzalez regular cut alto sax reeds on my Leblanc basset horn, alto clarinet mouthpiece with good results.

I have a Pedler metal alto clarinet. I didn't try a lot of different reeds. On a whim I used my BARI tenor sax artificial reed. It played a lot better than the cane reeds I had tried. I found this surprising, since I hated the bari reeds on my tenor sax and I have yet to find a synthetic reed that I like on a Bb clarinet. Go figure.

My favorite reeds on the alto clarinet are the Van Doren Java alto sax reeds. I use a Lomax mouthpiece on my Buffet Prestige alto and the sound is really quite beautiful.
Have also used VanDoren alto clarinet reeds and Gonzalez alto sax reeds with good results.
