 Clarinet/saxophone reed and ligature matches
Author: Johan H Nilsson

Which clarinet reeds and ligatures can be used for saxes and vice versa? For instance, I wonder if there is any difference *at all* between the Rovner MKIII ligatures for Bb clarinet and alto sax. They look identical (apart from the metal) and feel exactly the same on the mouthpiece.

Please help make the list complete.

Reeds:
soprano clarinet - soprano sax (friend told me)
alto clarinet - alto sax
bass clarinet - tenor sax
contra bass/alto clarinet - bass sax (at least Rico made a reed that fit all)

Ligatures:
soprano clarinet - alto sax
alto clarinet - tenor sax

Hey,

I bought a saxophone BG Super Revelation a few years back and it wasn't until i bought another one for clarinet when I realized that you can use them interchangeably and they also felt the same for me . My Francois Louis for saxophone also fits on my clarinet mouthpiece and works better than any other ligature i've tried. I currently use a Francois Louis on my clarinet because it sounds great!

I play on a Vandoren optimum AL3 for saxophone and a Vandoren M30 for clarinet.

You can also use Tenor sax reeds and Bass Clarinet reeds interchangeably and they sound pretty good either way. I've also used Alto sax reeds for Alto clarinet and that worked fine. Soprano sax reeds on a clarinet and clarinet reeds on a soprano sax isn't the best combo, for me at least.

I've used soprano clarinet ligatures, both stock 2-screw and Brancher Leggiero, on Berg Larsen and Bill Street tenor mouthpieces. But, in general, there is a lot more size variation with sax pieces. Some hard rubber ones are "slim line", some are much bigger-bodied. Then there are the metal ones — which also vary. Finding a Rovner that fits a sax mouthpiece sometimes takes some experimentation. It's different with reeds, where there's more standardization.

A few months ago I was experimenting with ligatures, and tried my alto sax Rovner dark on my B-flat clarinet. It looked a little large for the mouthpiece, but it worked quite well. I recently bought a Rovner clarinet MKIII (a wonderful ligature), but it's too small for an alto mouthpiece.

The available reeds and ligatures models for alto clarinet are limited. Legere offers no alto clarinet Signature reed and Rovner only offers the Dark ligature. The good thing is that you can use Legere alto sax reeds (have tried) and Rovner tenor sax ligatures as a substitute (haven't).

Can only chime in a little bit here... I don't see mention of a C-Melody sax, but they are said to use C-mel reeds, tenor sax reeds, or bass clarinet reeds. I would expect a certain amount of variation from brand to brand, so this is just a generalization that may not fit in a particular case.

Well, here's an unhelpful answer: It depends. I don't collect clarinets and saxes, honestly I don't (my nose is not growing longer! -- you're imagining things...), but I seem to have, um, a few of them, some of them old. I do sometimes use saxophone reeds on the larger clarinets, but the ligatures and reeds that suit me perfectly with some instruments and mouthpieces don't work at all on other instruments and mouthpieces. When somebody posts specific recommendations for a particular setup, I often find that information helpful, but I wouldn't dare try to generalize.

For ligatures, I use a Vandy Optimum on my soprano clarinets and on my bass. On all my saxophones, I use vintage Winslow ligatures--no longer being made, unfortunately.

For reeds, I have been using Forestone products exclusively for over five years on all my clarinets and saxophones in all of my playing venue--orchestra, wind ensembles and swing band. To my ear, a much better tone quality than the Legere's, especially in the upper registers on soprano--being a bamboo/plastic combination.

The one year in school that I played contra alto clarinet, I used baritone (not bass) sax reeds.

I wonder if Eb clarinet reeds would work for an Eb sopranino sax?

I use Légère Classic soprano sax and alto sax reeds on my B flat clarinet and my alto clarinet, very comfortable, sounds good to me. Besides, the Légère Europan cut reed for clarinet is based on a soprano sax reed profile.

This post makes me wonder : I love my Vandoren M/O ligatures both on soprano and alto clarinets, but as I play Selmer clarinets I saw the Selmer saxophone one-screw-silver-ligatures and they are very nice looking compared to the classic-two-screws-clarinet-ligatures... maybe the Selemr sax ligs can fit on my clarinets ?

Some tenor sax reeds work well on bass clarinet (e.g. I use Vandoren V16 strength 3.5 for orchestral bass clarinet)

I have never had success trying to swap ligatures between Alto sax and clarinet except for a BG Revelation which fitted both. I think the BD Duo is supposed to work on both, but none of my other ligatures ever have. Among others, I have a Vandoren Optimum for both instruments and they are clearly different sizes.

I've played Gonzales RC reeds for Tenor Sax on a Bass Clarinet, and I can tell it works perfectly fine.
