Have any of you ever used the floating rails ligature offered by sneezy sponsor Peter Spriggs? It looks interesting. I'm wondering if it works well? Sure is expensive. Thank you. Darby
P.S. Still wondering about Boosey Hawkes brand clarinets. Anyone own one?

Thank you Meri. Have you used one of the ligatures? Or do you work for or know Mr. Spriggs? I'm really interested in the ligature, but would like to get opinions on it. And would like to know more about the Boosey clarinets if anyone has any information. Thank you. darby

Darby, I have one of Peter Spriggs' ligatures, and like it very much. Unfortunately I am not an experienced or skilled player, but for me it was a clear advance on Rovner or Bonade. I am happy with it, and use it pretty exclusively.

I have about a dozen different ligatures I've bought over the years, including one of the Spriggs ligatures, which use occasionally. It works well, but for me is a little hard to adjust.
If you can put up with the bother, string is still best.

Next to my Kaspar ligature, the Floating Rails lig is the best i've played. Certainly the best currently being made.
It gives the reed alot more vibrance. Opens up the sound and makes articulation so easy. Sometimes it has a bit to thin of a sound. Depending on the reed and such.
I payed even more for my Kaspar ligature and haven't used anything else since. Not sure what i'll do when/if my Kaspar ever dies. Took me years to actually get one.

I've tried the Vandoren Optimum, the BG, the Rovner classic, the Bonade, the thing that came with my RC, and the Peter Spriggs. In my opinion, the Spriggs is far superior to any of the others. It makes articulation easier and gives a very clear sound. It is very easy to adjust, and grips the reed solidly without putting undue pressure on it. I occasionally play on the Rovner to take the zing out of reeds that are a bit too bright, but by and large, the Spriggs is the only ligature I use.

I tried the shoestring, ken. I read about it in David Pino's book but he didn't describe how to wrap it (exactly) so I did it my way and it wasn't too bad. I think the trick is to find the *best* way and the *correct* tension, and be consistant about it.
But for now this novice needs to stick to *simple* - no need to sdd more confusion to the equation.

I'm trying one at the moment. The price listed on its box is $65 US or $90 Canadian. I found it to be a very good ligature although I prefer the BG Super Revelation that I bought a few weeks ago for $45 Australian (around $25 US). I found the Floating Rails one to have a slightly thinner/brighter sound - it really comes down to what suits your mouthpiece, clarinet, personal preference and what kind of sound you're after. (and how many $'s you want to spend) My only criticism of both the peter Spriggs and my BG Super Revelation is that when quickly changing instruments in orchestra they don't hold the reed in place on the mouthpiece. (I might need to get the cork on my mp shaved down a little but i had no troubles with my old BG Standard ligature)
I'd be tempted to buy the Spriggs just 'cause it looks so cool though!
