 Where will clarinetfest 2002 be?
Author: rina

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me where clarinetfest 2002 will be. I realise that this is jumping the gun, since this year's hasn't even started yet, but I live a LONG way from New Orleans (Australia) and was wondering if next year's venue might be a little more aussie-dollar friendly.

[For those of you who have no idea what I'm referring to, the Aussie dollar has slipped from 85 US cents to 51 US cents in the last 4 years. In other words, it costs us Lots and Lots of money to travel in America, and right now, one night at the Hilton would cost me $200.]

So, as a community service, could you let the cat out of the bag?

muchos gracias

Hey! Maybe we should have it "down under" while the price is right. Let's see. If it costs me $100 for one night in NO, would that be $50 per night down yonder, I mean "under? Say! That's cheap at half the price - let's go to Australia! Maybe 2003???? Of course the economy will flip flop again by then. Guess I could skip NO this year, go to Australia and save some money, and boost their economy at the same time. I always wanted to cross the IDL anyway....... Hummm.

Good morning (evening to some) all.

You're more than welcome here any time! The last clarinet conference that we had here (big enough to garner any kind of advertising) was back in 1993, and I'm really starved for another one.

Jerry, you're right - you're $50 will give you $100 here, where it costs $2.50 for a cappuccino, and $150 to stay in Le Meridien hotel (5 stars).

As for our economy bouncing back? no chance :-( We're been dropping gradually for several years and our highest value in the last three has been 65 US cents, so you'd still get a good exchange rate.

Thanks for theinfo on Stockholm though - it gives me something to think about (quickly if I'm going to register for this year).

Yah, shor, ya betcha.

Rents in Stockholm are rather amazingly high.

There is a nearby converted prison, called Langholmen and the floating hotel, Mälardrottningen which offer some easy access to downtown.

Gamla Stan has cool stuff (last time over, there was a Ghurka Pipe and drum band that really Swung) most all the time.

Most any price will not show the 12% service charge and the dreaded Value Added tax of 21%!

I would love to go over, but only if I can find someplace cheaper to stay.
The rail service is good, and rents fall off rapidly as you go North.

The Clarinetfest organizers go out of their way to keep the prices low. Don't be surprised if they have housing in college/university dorms.

Re: Australia - it'd be nice (I've visited Perth & Bunbury waaaaay back and have fond memories) - but somehow I think the turnout might not be as high as needed to cover costs. It's not the cost of the accomodations - it's that blasted plane flight price from well-nigh anywhere.

Heavy sigh ...

"...- it's that blasted plane flight price from well-nigh anywhere."

You're right Mark -- one other thing, they got their seasons turned up-side-down. Do you leave hear in the winter for a fun filled summer there or leave here in the summer and play there in the cold. Guess we leave that to the organizers.
