Ok, I have become a little obsessed with this demure ligature so I don't mind having a bunch lying around.
Today I received my Vandoren M/O Masters (the one designated to fit the Masters mouthpieces) ligature in black. I already have the both Masters and non-Masters versions in gold.
The black version is a bit bigger in size (who knows why) than the gold versions. The plus side of this is that the front barrels through which the adjustment screw sits are perfectly parallel when tightened (I'm using V21s). Being larger than the gold version, it also seems to work fine on NON-Masters mouthpieces. I will NOT be switching back and forth however because my last one broke and it may have been in small part due to making the ligature fit both types of mouthpieces (going back and forth, back and forth).
I have heard from colleagues (that believe in that sort of thing) that the gold type M/O has a more covered sound than any of the other M/Os. Testing side by side I do find a bit more "bite" out of the black version but not enough to say one is decidedly more vibrant. If I where forced to choose based on sound though, I guess I'd throw my vote toward the black version. Considering the black (and the other non gold color ones) is $10 cheaper, I would say the non-gold version is the smarter choice (unless you need to match your gold keys, or Hamilton plated CSG or something like that).
And don't worry for my non-Masters mouthpieces. The standard black Vandoren M/O ligature is in the mail.

I like the Versa X much better- I always come back to it. But the black M/O has a unique aesthetic appeal to it since it's nearly invisible except the screw.
