 F. Uebel clarinet
Author: Elifix

Hi all,

I saw a listing online selling a F.A Uebel Reform Clarinet.
The details provided that it is made in 1978.

I tried to find more info on the bboard but most were about the standard Boehms instrument (in particular, how sharp they generally are).

Any one have any experience to share?

Thank you.

Hi Elifix,

I think we both saw the same post on the auction site that shall not be named. Personally I wouldn't pay nearly as much for these horns of unknown quality from the 70s. A bit retrospective search will show a pair of new Yammy RBs sold at much lower price.

Cheers

I would definitely speak to someone who has experience with that vintage Uebel. I had just had a chance to audit a new 'top-of-the-line' Oehler system Uebel that is not quite at the same level as their Boehms. I guess that means you'll have to KNOW what you are getting first.

I don't want this to come off as and indictment of Uebel by any means. The price point of the 634 is much lower than the 'top-of-the-line' Boehm. I think they are re-positioning themselves from being the German "bargain" instrument to being a world competitor and the Oehler's haven't caught up yet. Of course that is NOW, not 1978.

For some data points, please consider the following -- I have several F. Arthur Uebel instruments dating from the 1950s through 1970s (dates are estimated except in one case), all of which I play more or less regularly in musical groups:

1 standard-Boehm Bb soprano clarinet
1 full-Boehm A soprano clarinet
1 standard Oehler-system Bb clarinet
1 Oehler-system bass clarinet (original range to low D, extended to low C)
1 Boehm-system bass clarinet, range to low C, with Oehler-type narrow bore, manufactured in 1977

I would say that each of my instruments is at least 'very good', and some are certainly 'excellent'. However I'm not a professional player trying to earn a living at music, so consider these to be the opinions of a competent amateur.
