Buying Pads, individual or in sets?

So far, I've bought pads in pre-packaged sets for the particular clarinet, Bundy, Selmer, etc. However as I recall, one or two of the sizes they gave me didn't fit too well, so this time, I'm thinking of buying individual pads after measuring the cups.

What has been your experience?

It's probably best stocking up on the most popular sizes instead of buying premade sets as that way you'll be covered for most eventualities.

The type of pad you prefer to use as standard will determine how you take the measurements of the pad cups. Measure the inside diameters for cork, leather and synthetic pads and measure the outside diameter for skin and Gore-Tex pads which are just single layer skin pads with an outer covering of PTFE sheet.

There's usually a 1mm difference between the inside and outer diameters as pad cup side walls are usually 0.5mm thick, so a 10mm outer diameter pad cup will take a 9mm cork/leather/synthetic pad.

Thanks Chris, that's exactly what I'll do buy a range of sizes, I have quite a few clarinets to refurbish anyway.
