Hey guys-
Wondering what your thoughts are on the ycl-650. I currently own one, and it, to me, has a really good responsive feel. Anyone own one?

If you like it, who cares what anyone else thinks?

I have one. It's no longer my primary instrument, but it does play pretty well. It's got a bit of a "brighter" sound than my current Bb.

Everyone I've played on tends to have this almost Undertone "whine" playing anything above High C.

But at least That's what I've noticed and/or the specific ones I've played on

Amazingly bright and centered. Projects well in a band. Not so good, IMHO, in orchestra. Excellent workmanship! Very good clarinet.

I am a Yamaha fan and have owned/played several.

My Ridenour Lyrique clarinets are better in tune, have more consistent note to note resistance and timbre, much warmer sound and cost less. But the Lyrique key-work is not as nice as the Yamaha and the acoustics/material don't cut as well through the roar of large brass sections marinading in their on testosterone.

This is my argument for owning and using several excellent clarinets, but all having different sounds. Use the right tool for the job.

I could easily play a YCL-650 full-time with few complaints, by adjusting my MP/reed setup and some tuning tweaks.

Nice horn!

Tom

That was exactly my impression of it - not the right sound for orchestra (too bright) but works well for band.
