which do you all prefer sound wise- the buffet E11 or the selmer 210? they both sound like good instruments but the selmer is more exspensive(i know more espensive doesn't always mean better) of about 200.00 i was wondering which has a warmer, rounder tone- are they practically the same model? i would really appreciate your advice-- thanx- corey

I prefer the intonation of the E11, personally. Of course, you should try some of each, if possible. Listen carefully to the A, B, and C above the staff. The 210s that I've played were very sharp up there. (I do admit that I haven't tried them in 2-3 years, so they may be better now.) Another good lower-priced clarinet is the Sonata by LeBlanc.

I have to say "ditto" to Chris Hill's comment. The Buffet E-11 is one of the best intermediate clarinets you can get for a reasonable price. There are several dealers on eBay and online catalogues who sell these for under $600.00 brand new! That's a good price. Also, the Sonata is a really good intermediate-upper level clarinet with nearly dead-on intonation and great construction. It will cost a little more, but would last you into college and upper level play more like a pro model than the E-11. Look for a good buy on a Sonata but steer clear of the nickel keyed version--they had a problem with them turning blue a couple of years ago. They do make a silver-plated version.

I've never liked Selmers. I've tried several intermediates (I'm not sure if I tried the exact model you're looking at) and I liked the E-11 much better. I ended up with an R-13, though. :)

It's a matter of taste- which do YOU like better?

I have never played a Selmer clarinet but I do play an E-11 buffet crampton and I reallly REalllly love my E-11 even though it is cheaper it's still awesome! Try them out and see which one you like the best then you can answer that question. And when u do would you mind e-mailing me and telling me which you prefer?,

Elizabeth but you can call me Lizzie!

Steer clear of all USA Selmers. There are some good Paris models out there, the Prologue II is a nice clarinet, as well as the PARIS Omega. But, they're more expensive than the E-11.

I spent the day yesterday play-testing clarinets at my local dealer and was extremely impressed with the Buffet C-13 clarinet. It's a German-made clarinet (sometimes called the "International") and is a very nice sounding instrument. It responded well in all registers and was easy to play. I liked it much better than the E-11, although the E-11 is a bit less expensive--so there's that deal again.

I must say that I think the C-13 is going to be a best seller for my friend's music store. All the band directors around here are talking about it. And for me to recommend it is a bit odd since I'm a Leblanc fan from way back. Actually, the intonation on the C-13 reminded me of the Leblanc Esprit and Sonata. Nice one!
