Hello everyone,

I have a question I home someone out there can help me with. I currently play on a Buffet A clarinet with a diamond shaped insignia stamped right below the Buffet insignia. In this diamond, there is a stamp with S1. I enjoy the way this clarinet plays, but I would love to find out some information regarding this clarinet (I've searched futily for the past few weeks looking for information on it) So if anyone has any information whatsoever, it would be greatly appreciated!!

I believe the S-1 was made in the early to mid 70's and has a little different bore and register key placement than an R-13. It was most definitely a pro horn, but also definitely not an R-13 by another name. They were both produced during the same time frame. The only comment I've heard about an S-1 A was a glowing review by its owner. Hope your's plays as well for you as theirs did for them.

Bryan -

The Buffet S1 was I think the precedessor of the RC. Like the RC, it had a repositioned register key (with the vent higher up) and various other changes to improve intonation and make the scale more even.

It didn't last long for a couple of reasons. First, a lot of them were stuffy. I tried several when they came out and didn't like any of them. However, they were brand new out of the plastic bags and hadn't been set up, so they could have been leaking. Second, Buffet tried to market them by knocking the R-13. The representatives said Americans were hidebound and superstitious about things that ought to be changed. While it's true enough that the R-13 has some design problems, you don't get far criticizing what 99% of the pros are playing and calling them dumb for not realizing they're playing bad instruments.

If you like your S1, by all means continue playing it. It's been mentioned several times, here and on the Klarinet board. Search on both S1 and S-1.

Best regards.
