 New Vandoren Mouthpiece

Looks like Vandoren has a new mouthpiece coming out this April. I'm interested about this "new internal design".

The data sheet shows a .113 tip opening, which is a bit larger than average, and a medium length lay. The combination will take reeds on the soft side.

Vandoren has so many models now that telling them apart will be almost impossible, particularly with sample-to-sample variation.

I've never seen a Vandoren data sheet that says anything about internal design. You'll just have to play it and find how it works for you.

I was happy when I first read about the new Black Diamond Ebonite mouthpiece, but only for a moment.

When I first tried a vintage Vandoren Diamond Ebonite "Perfecta", I wrote an email to the company and asked if there would be a chance to re-introduce this wonderful mouthpiece. I got no answer, so I sent this email to them year after year. When I saw the new model on the website I thought at least my emails had some effect. But sadly, the material seems to remain that well known, low cost molded stuff, they are writing about just new design elements. I'm sure if it would be rod rubber, it could be mentioned in the first place as a premium feature. I'm a bit disappointed and have no interest to try any of these. Even Rico managed to make mouthpiece from rubber rod.

I've played the first prototype and was very impressed with its warm tone. Works well with the new V21s as well as other reed types.

Anyone who tried them yet? Seem to be going into stock now.

I tried the prototype a little more than a year ago, and several from their first delivered batch last week. In my opinion they play extremely even across all registers and have a very warm, covered and velvety sound. However, this might come at the cost of (less) overtones and projection, and they felt a little too dull for my personal taste. Articulation and legato was very comfortable. If I would compare them to other mouthpieces I've tried, I would say they are somewhat similar in playing style to Nick Kuckmeier's PlayEasy mouthpieces. I haven't tried the new vandoren in ensembles, orchestra or in large halls, so I cannot comment on how they work in those settings.
