Blown out?

Is there any truth to the idea that wooden clarinets "blow out" after some years of use? If so, what is it that happens, and is there scientific proof to back up the claim?

As Mark says, "blow-out" has had lots of discussion, both here and on the Klarinet board. Many people swear it happens, while others point out that they're playing instruments over 50 years old that are still great.

I combed the archives and found things to say on both sides. Certainly some clarinets deteriorate over time. However, two knowledgeable people, one an excellent technician and the other a former apprentice of the famous repairman Hans Moennig, described what happens and how it can be fixed. I once played on a clarinet that was definatly blown out. The slightest increase in amount of air made this thing bend sharp. Great for jazz.
