While I wait for a response to my question about crack repair, I thought I'd ask about other brands of clarinets. What do you think about Pedler? Boosey Hawkes? Evette Schaefer? What Paris brands are no good? Or are most all French horns good? Thank you again. Darby

Pedler, like most brands made several grades of clarinets from student to pro. The first challenge is to know which model you're looking at. The better grades of Pedlers made prior to WW2 are not all that bad. The student grades ran from fair to poor, depending on the model. After WW2, they really went downhill fast as Harry Pedler was gone and no longer running the company.

Darby -

The history of Buffet's Evette and Evette Schaeffer clarinets is complex. See, for example, http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=25554&t=16859 ,
http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=15524&t=15512 ,
http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=14947&t=14806 and
http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=9975&t=9749 .

Some of them were entry-level student instruments. On the other and, the "Master Model" was an R-13s with minor cosmetic flaws that didn't affect the playing.

The Pedlers I've played are intermediate-level and entry-level instruments. You have to check the intonation carefully on them. I have a "Lyric by Pedler" that's not bad. I keep it put together on a stand by my computer, with a Legere reed to blow on the spur of the moment.

Boosey & Hawkes instruments ran the gamut from entry-level to artist level. The ones you see on eBay is the Edgeware model, which is a decent student instrument that often goes for lower prices than the equivalent Noblets and Bundys. The top of the line Model 1010 had a large English bore and needs a special mouthpiece.

French clarinets can be good or lousy. Stick to the big 3 Paris makers -- Buffet, Leblanc, Selmer -- and Yamaha.

Best regards.
