Typically the Selmers and the Buffets are slightly different in their bore sizes. You don't have to use a Buffet barrel, but you need one that is made for Buffet clarinets for it to work properly. You can use Deg Accubore barrels (aluminum alloy material), or you can get replacement Buffet barrels through Woodwind and Brasswind and International Musical Suppliers, Brook Mays Music and others who have online discount musical supplies.

A good tuning barrel and mouthpiece can make all the difference in your tone and intonation.

Two of the most common complaints from clarinetists are (1) a tendency to sharpness in the upper register, which is caused by the bore of the barrel being too large at the mouthpiece end and (2) throat tones are sharp, caused by the bore being to small in the clarinet body in relation to the bore at the mouthpiece end.

In other words the bore of the mouthpiece and upper barrel should be the same and there should not be too much of difference in the bore at the top of the barrel and the bore at the top of the upper joint. I think that is why most of the aftermarket barrels feature a venturi or double taper configuration.

More concretely typical Buffet bore size is 0.574" and only Selmer Signature has 0.575" and 10G 0.574". Other Selmer professional model have smaller bores. The smallest is Recital.

By the way, I use Buffet Chadash barrel 'A' type, which has a smaller bore than ordinary Chadash barrels, for my Selmer 10SII. I found this setting have different female and male connection heights and there is an outer gap of about 0.5mm.
This may mean there is no inner gap but may mean when a Selmer barrel is used for Buffet R-13, it may cause a inner gap between barrel and upper joint, which may cause a detrimental effect on the air flow.

For all of you that play on LeBlanc clarinets, I just checked the measurements, as Hiroshi suggested, between my upper joint Concerto A and the Chadash "A" barrel that I use (and like VERY MUCH), and found them to be compatabile with no gap to cause problems in the air flow. I would suggest to jan that she consider a Chadash Bb barrel as a replacement for her Buffet-issue R-13 barrel that is cracked. They are no "price-er" than ordering a barrel from Buffet and will probably improve the way your instrument plays. Good clarineting!!! (and thanks to Hiroshi for his always interesting statistical analysis)

Jan,
Checking at http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/resources/Retail.html (available via the upper left hand menu on this page under Vendors) will give you the link to Guy Chadash's site (under Chadash Clarinets).
