Opinions of the Selmer CL300 please

What is y'alls opinion of the Selmer CL300 as an intermediate plastic? I picked one up that was in like new condition for $150. I thought that was pretty reasonable. The horn doesn't look like it has ever been played. I thought I might upgrade the mouthpiece.

IMHO, plastic is always student quality. Selmer makes high quality plastic clarinets (compared to Armstrong/Artley and Jupiter). You did get a good deal for only $150. I'm just curious, do you have that huge carry-all plastic case? I personally couldn't stand those, and would replace it for something a little smaller.

It's a Selmer case, plastic body. There is only room for the clarinet and small accessories (cork grease, a reed or two). It is not one of those cases that you can put music in.

With a good mouthpiece you should be in good shape until you get into upper-level stuff.

If you're on a budget I recomnend the Fobes Debut. Clark Fobes is a Sneezy sponser (I think) and you can get the MP from Muncywinds (muncywinds.com). I got mine for under $30 and it is a very good MP for a beginner (such as me). I think they consider it "free blowing" but I'm to young (I mean new) to realize what that means.

Good luck.

IMHO, it ain't great. I've had one since January (Christmas gift, about $800 Canadian). I've been playing for less than a year and I've already outgrown this instrument. The keys aren't too comfortable and the left pinky finger cluster keys are strangely positioned. Even with a better mouthpiece, it still sounds bad in the altissimo range (compared to a 30-year old plastic Bundy!). Bottom line, if you're playing 2nd or 3rd in 100-500 level pieces, you're fine. Otherwise, get a really good mouthpiece or consider selling.

It's a fair horn, but there are several other student models that are much better. My big complaints are the uncomfortable keys, and the tone holes seem difficult to cover, especially for smaller fingers. It does produce a reasonable tone. Better student horns, in no particular order, are the Buffet B-12, Yamaha YCL-20, Vito V40, and the older Selmer Bundy's.

For a good student mouthpiece I recommend the Hite Premier.
