Hi. I'm in the middle of relearning my clarinet articulation. I was moving my jaw lots and not moving my tongue at all - my teacher didn't notice. It's really horrible and boring, and I feel like beginner again (I was grade 7 before).Has anyone else had to this and got over it, or in the same situation, or can anyone offer any advice?
Thanks,
Richard

I know exactly what you mean. I had been told i tongued completely wrong which gave me like an extra sound, it was only really noticable when i played softly, it was a thudding sound as i tongued. i relearnt and now sound so much better in those beautiful quiet pasages!

p.s. keep practicing, u will be much better and even thankful in the future. I realise its a bit tedious now though!

I also had to do that too, a couple years back. It is extremely tedious at first. Luckily, in our band we had a great slow piece with a lot of legato tonguing, and I used that to help gain a feel for how my tongue is supposed to move. START SLOWLY. It wouldn't be a bad to set a metronome to quarter note=60 or slower, and just concentrate on exactly what your tongue is doing. After a few weeks of slow work, it will start to feel natural, and eventually you won't have to think about it. Afterwards, you'll never THINK of going back. I can tongue a lot better than I ever could, with more sensitivity to legato and staccato. Good luck!

I have tongued wrongly from the begining, I have been anchor tonguing. what she (my teacher) has done is just tell me how to tongue right and give me this excersize (sp?) and I started slow and and kept trying to remember what is the right way to tongue. Just tongue slowly and get faster. That is all I can really tell you to do.

Don't worry about it---it's a VERY common problem, just be glad your teacher pointed it out so you can fix it. I would offer you advice specifically, but I didn't have that problem. What mindy said holds true with everything---do it slow and make it faster gradually.
Good luck,
Julia
p.s. Mindy--the correct spelling (since you asked) is : excercise

I had to relearn my articulation too. For the first 5 or 6 years I played clarinet, I would tongue the back of my upper teeth, moving over the mouthpiece. No one caught it until I took a few saxophone lessons and was trying the same thing. The problem took a while to correct, but I'm glad my teacher caught it when he did.

Normally I wouldn't correct someone's spelling but since Mindy asked and your answer is incorrect and so would lead her astray, I think it's appropriate to post the proper spelling. It is: exercise

oops...sorry. Its called a TYPO!
Anyway, thank you Dee, for pointing that out. I think it is good to correct others spelling, even (especially) if they do not know english very well---what better way to learn.
Anyway, thanks again!! and have a good night!
Julia

Unless people specifically ask, don't point out incorrect spelling. Rather, spell it correctly in a follow-up message. I personally dislike abbreviated "English" in postings ...
cuz it makes u look lazy and ignorant
but use it when I communicate via IM.

Yep! I feel your pain!
And I'm still working on relearning how to properly articulate from an excellent performer and teacher. And yes it's tedious and hard to "unlearn" any bad habit but so far its been worth the effort.
Good luck and keep on practicing!

If you jump from primary to 3rd or 5th harmonics, Jaw should move downward like pronunciating 'O' but the tongue arc should be changed just like pronunciating 'eh' or 'ih'. This is somewhat difficult to train at first but 90% law works: to solve a problem, to know how to means 90% of the problem is solved.
