At the NAMM show in CA in January, the Yamaha CSVR made its debut. Did anybody have a chance to play it? What were your impressions?

I and my clarinet teacher colleague were quite impressed! Even blowing, good intonation and tone, keywork felt just fine. I think they have a real winner and at a reasonable price compared to the top end Buffet and Selmer models. I'm probably going to get one.

I tried one last weekend at CASMEC, which was taking place alongside the CA all-state ensembles. I had just tried one of the other models (can't remember which - low F correction key and side Eb lever), and the person managing the Yamaha booth urged me to try out the CSVR, saying that they were excited to be introducing it.
It was in a noisy room and I only tried it for a minute or two before I had to leave, so I can't really go into details about the exact specifications of tuning, tone, etc. From what I could tell, though, it was a very nicely-built and nice-sounding instrument. The key action felt very natural, and something about the tone stood out to me in comparison to the other instruments they had on display - I guess you could describe it as a warmer or lighter sound. No glaring intonation issues stood out to me. Was definitely among my favorite few instruments I tried there.

I look forward to trying them. Yamaha makes terrific instruments that are very well designed and made. Over the years I have always been extremely impressed with the workmanship and playability. The response and intonation is always superb.

Has that replaced the CSG iii?

I would think that it would be the newest model of the CS series - which I believe started with the CS and later CSV

Yeah, it has the usual 66mm barrel of typical clarinets. The original CSV played brighter than the CSGs, but also featured some really even tuning.

** Disclaimer- I am a Yamaha Performing Artist- take that for what it is...

Actually, the CSVR has a 65 mm barrel, and I don't think I could get up to pitch with a 66 mm barrel. This clarinet has a beautiful sound- I participated in some of the beta testing of this new model, and I'm really excited about it. It plays quite differently from the CSG and CSG II (which I currently play). The sound and feel of the CSVR is very reminiscent to me of the Buffet R13; it has a beautifully focused sound and a very even scale.

I picked out a set of these in November, and have really been enjoying them. In fact, they're going to be my next set of clarinets! The fact that they're selling a couple hundred less than a nickel plated R13 is an extra bonus. I'd highly recommend giving these horns a try!

Hey "klarinetkid,"

How do they compare with the CSVs?
