Hey all!
Anybody know of any good sites or books where I can find a remotely detailed history of musical instrtuments, especially the fife and clarinet? I really need to know who and when they were invented. Also, were there any instrument invented during the Renaissance (1400-1600)? Thanks!!!

Their is a Galpin Society site in England which is dedicated to organology and their are a number of good books on the subject such as The Cambridge Companion series which are available for most wind and brass instruments. Musical Instruments Through the Ages edited by Frances Baines published by Pelican. There is also a collection of instruments at the Edinburgh University which has some good pictures. Any decent university library should have plenty of material which will be more reliable than the web. Contact me if I can be of any help I am a PhD student in the organology field.

Yes, all of our "good books" on clarinets will discuss the cl family history, Baines gives a broader view of woodwinds, and Curt Sachs' "The History of Musical Instruments" and Groves "Dictionary of Music ---" are comprehensive [library-type] publications. Sibyl Marcuse "A Survey---" , the Heifitz series " Clarinet" by Jack Brymer " etc and earlier, Rendall "The Clarinet" and Bate "The Oboe" are my standbys! Also there are many fine museums in the US and Europe, a few of which I have visited, so others and I can provide some info if you wish. Luck, Don

Hello Francesca,
there is a brand new book with 272 pages about the history of the clarinet and famous clarinet-makers. But it is in German and rather expensive (about 70 $):

Günter Dullat: Klarinetten - Grundzuege ihrer Entwicklung
published by Verlag Erwin Bochinsky, Frankfurt am Main, Germany
ISBN 3-923639-44-9
