I'm very lucky to get visit this orchestra on a semi-regular basis. Looking forward to reading this. Thanks for sharing. That David Howard recording mentioned above drives me crazy in both good and bad ways. I guess that's what music is supposed to do!

What about that recording drives you crazy? Howard sounds like he came straight from a Mitchell Lurie lesson except that he likes that wonderful vintage Chedeville sound that stays round and sweet even in the altissimo. His interpretations are fresh and rhythmically robust. I especially like the way he keeps the rhythm and sound organic, flowing, and subtle in the Hindemith instead of becoming metallic and robot-like with a nasy stridency the way lots of players do in that piece. His rapport and blend with the pianist is quite good.
So, what's not to like?

You've summed it up pretty well seabreaze. I love the tone, inflection, and ensemble in the Hindemith, but David's use of rubato irks me greatly. I understand that this is somewhat contradictory, thus it drives me mildly mad. I don't want my Hindemith sounding anything like Brahms, and from what I understand neither did Hindemith.
