 Ligature for Ab Sopranino

Just wondering if anyone has a resource for a ligature for an Ab Sopranino clarinet mouthpiece? Thanks much!

The easy fix would be to use one of the thinner silk rat-tail braided cords (found at any good fabric store) and just tie the reed on. Don't forget to knot the ends (to pull it tight) and run it through a cake of 100% beeswax a few times to make it a bit tacky. A standard Eb mouthpiece cap may slip over that system ok (or bend down to it?).

I wonder if sopranino sax would work? Soprano Sax ligatures fit Eb Clarinets, I wonder if sopranino ligatures would fit Ab Clarinets...Worth a shot!

Also there's this: http://forum.saxontheweb.net/showthread.php?75281-Make-Your-Own-Ligature I made one for my Bb clarinet and used it for a good while before getting an optimum.

If all else fails, you could learn to tie a string ligature like Paul Aviles suggests.
I've been using this string when I'm playing with a string ligature (2mm, though I'm going to try the 1.5mm too)

I don't think string really needs wax to stay on the mouthpiece, but this string is waxed anyways.

I tie it the way that's shown in this video, except that I find it faster to loop the last loop around your thumb before threading the remaining string through.

Masking tape works well!

Check some ligatures made for metal soprano or sopranino sax mouthpieces as they might fit.

Vandoren website says that you can order one (and a cap) along with their Ab mouthpiece. Here's the link:

Thanks for the advice everyone. As another option, my friend Al Asmus who owns an instrument repair shop locally said he could custom make one for me. I was at his shop yesterday....we were having fun comparing the size of the tiny Ab to other clarinets!

Kelly can I ask you what Ab clarinet you have got? I was hugely interested when Bradford Lloyd sold his but got pipped to the post ;-)

There was an Italian one for sale which was nearly full Boehm (everything except the low Eb) - I can't remember if that was the same one but incredible how they managed to cram all that keywork on such a tiny instrument.

Paula -- thanks for your interest in the horn. It was an amazing little horn, and an excellent conversation piece. But, I found it impractical (almost no music written for it) and just too darn hard to play (my fingers are large to begin with, and the little beast made me feel absolutely grossly gigantic!)

Chris P -- the one I sold was a Rampone & Cazzani and it was, in fact, almost full boehm (it lacked only the low Eb)

Given the size, everything was a challenge -- I didn't care much for the mouthpiece it came with, but there are few options. There are few reed options. A replacement case would have been wickedly expensive. So, I was pleased when it was sold to a person who I knew would play it regularly, and care for it properly.

Use string ... on a MP this small, it would only take 7-10 turns ...
