 Metal Clarinet cleaning

I'm making my girlfriend a lamp out of a metal clarinet and the clarinet she sent me reeks, it has the green gunk around the valves, there appears to be some white mold on the lower keys. I'm hoping there is a solvent solution that I can soak the whole instrument in that will help. I'm not really looking to polish it as i want it too look antique and rustic. The pads don't really matter either because it probably won't ever be played again. It looks like it is nickel plated and from my research i can soak it in a mild solution of acetic acid. What is everyone's thoughts on the subject? My primary concern is the smell.

Warm water, a bottle brush for the bore plus a toothbrush, the cheapest drugstore-brand peppermint toothpaste, and you're good.
