I'm having some adventures with the bass clarinet these days. I was wondering if you could recommend some bass clarinetists that I could listen to as I continue to experiment with the instrument. Thanks so much!

Watch all of Michael Lowenstern's videos on youtube. They are all very insightful, and some of rather humorous. I think his channel is called Earspasm Music.

Annev,
An "adventure" is exactly what it is. Michael Lowenstern is exactly the person to watch and enjoy. A magnificent player and a very funny guy.
Be sure to view the one on ligatures. You are in for a treat.
HRL
PS Be sure to enroll from the Earspasm page as there are some excellent exercises to download.

Check my website, I have several records from live performances. I always thought I was pretty good. :-)

Thank you all very much for your suggestions. I enjoyed spending some time at Michael Lowenstern's website and watched a few of his instructional videos, which were very helpful and interesting. I'll be going back for more viewing!
Ed, I also really enjoyed visiting your site, which is full of interesting articles, including, of course, bass clarinet! I found some very helpful suggestions there. But I wasn't able to access your live performance links. I do have Safari on my PC. Would you have any suggestions?

If you're interested in the jazz side of things, there's always Eric Dolphy, who also did some work with Mingus. Also, Bernie Maupin is great, though he is less well known but not less appreciated for his work with Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock. Further into jazz, you may be able to dig up some recordings of Bob Mintzer and Marcus Miller on the bass clarinet, but they have spent less time recording with the instrument.
And of course I second Lowenstern and our very own Ed Palanker!

Well no one listed the top big name bass clarinet soloists so I will give it a shot...
Rocco Parisi
Henri Sparnaay
Henri Bok
Lawrie Bloom
Renate Rusche-Staudinger has a CD out about a decade ago that is fantastic
Edmund Welles if you want something a big different
Evan Ziporyn has some interesting stuff out as well
I can dig up more if you get bored.

Hi anney, I don't know why you can't hear my recordings on my site. I just went on it myself via Safari and had no trouble listening to the Bozza, the first one. I remember someone else once mentioned they couldn't hear it and someone else suggested that they need to upgrade something or lacked something but I can't remember. I'm not very tech savvy, if it doesn't work you have to seek help. Maybe someone else can tell you. I hope you get a chance to listen.

(the problem, Ed, is how the audio files are embedded in your page. They will probably only load properly on a Mac as you need a full QuickTime installation. It might better to just use a link to an mp3 file when you click on the music title)

Thanks Ben, I hope Anney reads your suggestion. I don't have that problem but he, and a few others have.

Ed, I was able to finally download your clips. I'm not sure what the issue was, but it resolved itself (maybe the issue was me - I'm not very tech savvy either!). I enjoyed listening to the clips very much - you have a beautiful warm sound on the bass clarinet (such a pleasure!).
Thank you also for all the other suggestions for bass clarinet players to listen to. I've been enjoying making my way down the list and hearing the different tone qualities and styles, as well as listening to their tips and learning suggestions. There is a lot of variability in how the bass clarinet can sound, and I'm enjoying thinking about the elements that appeal to me and which I hope I can (eventually) find. Since I'm playing bass clarinet in orchestra at the moment, one thing I'm curious about is how the tone quality I feel/hear relates to how well it projects and blends. All very good fun and good learning!
