So you thought that Larry Combs just played great classical clarinet huh? I found this record back in 1966 in the college music library. Just some local group from Rochester NY. Larry is playing jazz alto sax on it and is some pretty heavy company of young players at the time. You can hear his solo at 3:35 on this cut. Pretty good for a classical clarinet player.

I was lucky enough to see him lead a big band from the lead alto chair at Symphony Hall ten or fifteen years ago. It was the week of the Midwest Clinic and the program was "The Nutcracker". It was Tchaikovsky's original suite juxtaposed with Duke Ellington's arrangement, traded back and forth between the two ensembles, movement by movement. The big band was in front of the CSO, which was conducted by Daniel Barenboim. A very memorable concert!

I did want to seriously add that back in the early 90's a saxophone playing colleague of mine heard us clarinet geeks going on about Larry Combs. He wanted us all to know what an amazing jazz saxophone player was back in his youth. So at least at one time, the saxophone community was hip to this history.

Larry Combs did also continue to play jazz sporadically while in the CSO with a group in Chicago called "Ears."

Paul,

I remember the group EARS in Chicago. I used to sub on 1st tenor in the Dave Remington big band at the Wise Fools Pub, and those guys played in the band. That was around 1975, and I think Bobby Lewis, and Cy Touff were in it. Can't remember the rest. They had invited me to come down to hear them, but I was not able to make it at the time. Cy Touff played bass trumpet, was a great jazz player, and played the lead trombone book in Dave Remington's band on bass trumpet and it worked. Amazing players! I wish I could have heard EARS.
