I know this is a clarinet site, but does anyone know what key a fife is in?

Fifes are available in different keys. Bb and D are popular.

Aulos and Yamaha both make plastic fifes I think they are in C.The Yam, is fairly simple while the Aulos has some double holes as per the recorder.

Note that a fife has 3 finger holes for the left hand and 3 for the right, so that the lowest note is what we would think of as D on a flute. Like pennywhistles, fifes are named for their lowest note. Therefore, a fife in D will finger like a flute in C and will sound "in C" when you play it. To play a C fife, you'll have to read up a step or learn new fingerings. Therefore, at the beginning you should stick to fife in D, or perhaps in G, which will play like a clarinet in the low register.

Best regards.

The Tin Whistle fingering chart on Sneezy should help with the key of D.
