 sheet music storage

I presently have three cardboard file boxes full of music books and sheet music for various instruments. I'm having trouble with music curling and bending unless jam packed into the boxes. Anyone have suggestions of commercially available products under $200 that would work better? A plus would be if it was actually attractive.

Margaret:

I am confused. Whether the music stays in boxes that given its stacking weight and jammed storage helps the music stay straight, or whether its sits on bookshevles smushed together with bookstops to keep it straight, it should in theory take up the same area.

Would an IKEA bookcase, or a visit (online or in person) to The Container Store for ideas not address your issues?

Go on craigslist and search for file cabinets. A good old legal size will do wonders. I got a genuine Hon for 15 bucks, new it would have been much more. Very sturdy, and with a dolly you can easily move your music safely. I use hanging file folders, kept tight with the supplied movable back in each drawer.

Right now the music is arranged vertically in the boxes with the spine facing the ceiling, using manilla folders to separate catagories and in some cases to protect individual music on printer paper. I presently have separate boxes for each instrument. I had maybe 2 inches of extra space in two of the boxes, but that has allowed the music to sink into a curled or bent shape. Now I'm experimenting with space fillers inside the boxes, which is an imperfect solution. Music in the box that is jammed full doesn't bend, but is hard to get in and out.

I've been thinking of switching to hanging file folders in a filing cabinet as TJTG suggested, but am also interested in all suggestions. Also wasn't sure if music in file cabinets would still bend.

Hi again Margaret:

It sounds like that whatever mechanism you employ to store your music, that the space said music takes up will need to be adjustable such that the music is always held tightly together when in storage and not being examined by you.

In that aspect, Mr. Graf's and my ideas are similar. But to expand (no pun intended) on Mr. Graf's idea, I seem to recall file cabinets where contents were held upright and tight when the drawer was closed, but as the drawer opened, the adjustable length arm in the back of the drawer that kept the music tight in storage, would release, allowing examination of the music in a non-compressed state.

Maybe it was just wishful thinking. If I find said device I'll communicate my findings.

How about setting the boxes on their ends so that the music lies flat?

Best regards,
