 Martin Ferres Ligature?
Author: Ben Shaffer

I'm wondering if the Martin Ferres black one screw leather Ligature might be an improvement over the Light and Dark Rosvner Ligatures I'm using.
Don't get me wrong as my current set up with the Rosvner Ligatures sounds pretty nice, but I guess like all of us I'm always looking for an inexpensive way to improve my sound
Any opinions on this Ligature would be most welcome :)

I like the Rovner Light a lot. It has many good characteristics and does not muffle the vibrations of the mouthpiece as much as the Dark. That said, I use the Freres Ligature quite a bit and I think it adds more punch to articulation and gives a more robust sound. Its architecture is pretty much identical to the BG Revelation ligatures but the Freres IS made of actual leather (for sound, this is a better material) and there is a very thin piece of leather over the metal insert on which the reed actually sits.

A VERY good ligature. And when you consider the price, an AMAZING ligature !!!

I have a video tape of Joe Allard late in his life. I think it is on youtube now. I'm not sure what ligature he uses, but it was a 2 screw, and he would just tighten the back screw and play when demonstrating things. When I bought my Harrison back in the 70's I was told to tighten the back screw just enough, and barely tighten the front screw. I use Rovner light and the old Eddie Daniels on tenor sax for jazz, and they are great. I got a Rovner light when he first came out with them. They are fast to put on, and if you need to remove the mouthpiece, they stay in place. I would say the BG SuperRevelation for me if I had to pick one for fast draw, good articulation, and good sound. Tomorrow I probably would have a different answer. Go figure.
