 Fun clarinet facts?
Author: EBC

Hello all,

I'm currently working on a presentation of the clarinet for a group of young children, and I've been asked by the coordinator of the event to come up with a "fun clarinet fact." I have a few in mind, but welcome suggestions. The more wacky and entertaining, the better!

Thanks,

Eric

Nikki Minaj:

a fellow clarinetist

Marcus Scribner of the ABC US TV Show Blackish as well. As discussed on, yes, Jimmy Kimmel's show, Jimmy being another clarinet player.

Bass clarinets burn longer than soprano clarinets.

Maybe have them guess the number of holes/keys etc and offer a prize

It's not exactly a fact but I have found that young children usually find it fun to help you pull your instrument parts through at the end of the session (you put the cord through and make sure nothing is caught up on keys etc and then they can give it a good heave).

Do you count the mouthpiece and bell holes as one or two...? :)

Clarinet can play softer than the other woodwinds (at least the ones with reeds - I'm not sure about the flute).

Times like yours often make Buffet Clarinet's limited 1 time production run of their B12 model, in lucite, quite a hit to play:

Our co moderator Mr. Kantor put a picture up of this instrument in a post concerning this model clarinet, which is second in this thread.

You might want to show the kids all the different materials clarinets have been/are made out of: plastic, hard rubber, grenadilla, cocobolo, rosewood, metal, carrots, etc.

Yes, carrots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BISrGwN-yH4

You might have them guess what the word "clarinet" means.

Show them how a high noisy sound on just the mouthpiece is mysteriously changed into a beautiful sound just by adding the rest of the clarinet.

Have them count how many notes you can play. I frequently do this, and my range only goes to C7...

If I were called to give such a presentation, I would bring my metal, plastic, hard rubber, metal-lined hard rubber, and wooden clarinets, play each for the students, and have them guess which one is which.

Comparing a metal clarinet to a silver-plated straight soprano sax would also be fun.

What great suggestions! I've never given such a demonstration but I'm going to save this thread, just in case.
