A friend is an amatuer knifemaker. He makes beautiful folding knives that are like fully functional pieces of jewellery. A few weeks back he mentioned that finding suitable wood for the handles is getting to be an expensive business, with boutique wood suppliers charging telephone number prices for quality wood. He described what he was looking for in terms of quality, colour and size and it struck a chord with me. I dug out some old clarinet bodies that were way past their best and also a dozen or so barrels. It seems they're perfect for his purpose, and I'm promised an exquisite small folding knife with handles by Boosy and Hawkes.
